On September 23, Ambassador ZHANG Jun was invited to attend the dragon cocktail "Investment and Opportunities in China" organized by the Netherlands Council for Trade Promotion (NCH). He delivered keynote speech entitled Seize Opportunity and Strengthen Cooperation for a Healthy and Stable Development of Sino-Dutch Relationship (please click http://www.chinaembassy.nl/eng/xwdt/t606502.htm for full text of his speech). He also answered questions relating to challenges facing China in its economic and social development and current investment environment in China. Mr. Haakma, chairman of the board of NCH, Mr. Wientjes, Chairman of the board of VNO-NCW and more than 100 Dutch entrepreneurs participated in the event.

Ambassador ZHANG said China's economy has shown positive signs in recent time, but China is still faced with a very difficult task in the recovery of its economy. China will continue to follow the proactive fiscal policy and moderately easy monetary policy and implement the stimulus package fully and incorporate new elements into it while necessary. By doing so, China's economy will continue to maintain fast and steady growth and the country's social stability and harmony will be further promoted. Both in fighting against the current crisis and in promoting long term economic development, China will firmly stick to the opening up policy and resolutely oppose any kinds of protectionism in trade and investment.

Ambassador ZHANG said although the financial crisis negatively affected the economy of both China and the Netherlands, it also enables the two countries to seek sustainable and sound cooperation at much higher level and on a wider range of areas. entrepreneurs in the Netherlands should seize this opportunity and be more forward looking. They should continue to participate actively and constructively in the opening up and development process of China. By doing so, they will contribute greatly not only to the two countries economic and trade cooperation but also the long term development of bilateral relations. He believes the 2010 Shanghai EXPO to be held next May will be another good opportunity to consolidate political trust, deepen economic and trade cooperation, strengthen cultural and personnel exchanges between the two countries. He also believes the Shanghai EXPO will be a new starting point for the stable and sound development of Sino-Dutch bilateral relations.

All participants positively evaluated China's economic and social achievement and the forceful measures taken by China in tackling the current crisis. They said Ambassador ZHANG's speech enabled to have a better picture of current China's economic situation and its investment environment, it also boosted their confidence in the future Sino-Dutch economic cooperation. They also expressed theire willingness to continue to invest and do business in China, and contribute to both Sino-Dutch economic cooperation and the long term stable development of Sino-Dutch relations.
